Here stood the house of one of the main trader and shipowner families in Getaria. In the early 16th C., the Basurto gave a boost to capitalist fisheries, by buying new kind of nets. They also invested in fish salting and later, since 1580, in marinade industry. Several members of the family, engaged in the “Invincible Navy”, died in 1588. At the beginning of the 17th C., Juan Ortiz de Basurto invested in shipbuilding for whaling and American trade. So did his son and his nephew (Juan Ortiz and Cristóbal). Besides, they fit out expeditions to Terranova.
