The excavations on the site of the Palace Zarautz in 2006, revealed the presence of a rich deposit, occupied since the second century A.D. until the twentieth century and allowed therefore to reconstruct the history of the place over 2000 years. Among the findings are the remains of Roman buildings or set of whalebone XI century, which are the oldest evidence of whaling in Europe. Several presentations at the town and surrounding Getaria, undertaken by teams of archaeologists have unearthed other important fields, such as early medieval cemetery of the church of San Salvador, the chapel of San Prudencio and the church of San Martín de Tours (Askizu neighborhood).
