HISTORY
Its location between the parish church and the Olano tower creates one of the most interesting Gothic ensembles in the Basque Country. The aesthetic and referential value of this complex is enhanced by its location at the northern end of the town, dominating the seafront of the walls and the port that stretches out at its feet.
S. II - VRoman Period
The first constructive remains date from the 2nd century . They are located on the banks of a stream that descended along the area currently occupied by the medieval urban centre of the town, to flow into the cliffs that overlooked the bay.S. VI - XIEarly Middle Ages
The fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD ushered in a long period in which the inhabitants lived in huts on the ruins of Roman-period buildings. A village grew up around a church, which served as a parish church, and whose economic base was based on the exploitation of the sea's resources.1209Founding of Getaria
The town was founded in 1209 and the old area of the village was reorganised. The space was organised into parallel streets and the spaces in between were divided up for the construction of the blocks of houses, at which time the original tower of Zarautz Jauregia was built.S. XV - XVIIIEarly modern period
The Zarauz family, like many other lineages in Gipuzkoa in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, undertook a policy of outward projection. This was reflected in the different construction stages of the Zarautz Jauregia, which evolved from the primitive tower to occupy the space we know today.S. XIX-XXILate modern period
After the building was abandoned, its use evolved from a residence to other uses such as a slaughterhouse or military barracks. Today it houses the tourist office, as well as the Mundubira museum and a multi-purpose hall.
